The Belloc, Haiti Mission: A Journey of Transformation
Established in 2011 through the inspired partnership of Jay Stauffer and Belloc native Samuel Dumond, the Belloc, Haiti Mission began with a vision to evangelize through vibrant children’s Summer Bible Schools and nightly family gatherings. Nestled in the remote mountains southwest of Port-au-Prince, Belloc is a subsistence farming community lacking basic amenities like running water and electricity. Yet, the spirit of the community shines brightly. Our Bible School quickly became a beacon of hope, drawing over 200 children daily and supported by a dedicated team of 16 Haitian staff members.
In 2014, we expanded our mission to include a widow’s ministry, offering prayer, encouragement, and quarterly food distributions to over 20 local widows. Our commitment to the community was further solidified through disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Matthew and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 15 years, our unwavering presence has earned the community's respect and trust.
In 2019, we launched a transformative Summer English Language class led by the passionate Mr. Cliford Senat, a Belloc native with dreams of becoming an English interpreter. English proficiency is a game-changer for these students, unlocking global educational resources, relationships, and career opportunities. Our inaugural class welcomed 24 eager students using the engaging Side By Side curriculum. By 2021, attendance had soared to 100 students, taught in the local open-air school. This explosive growth sparked the vision for an advanced education center in Belloc.
Thanks to the generosity of the FPC Thomaville congregation, construction of the Advanced Education Center began in January 2023. This project provided rare employment opportunities for local labor and was supported by the community's voluntary efforts.
Amidst global challenges like COVID-19 and regional gang violence, we have persevered and flourished, and in July 2024, the school opened its doors to over 200 students across five class levels!
The Belloc, Haiti Advanced Education Center is a 1,400-square-foot facility featuring three modern classrooms, entirely powered by a 3.6kW solar panel array. With Starlink internet, students access a world of educational resources and enjoy high-quality video conferencing. Smart TVs in each classroom enhance learning, and the comfortably furnished center has become a hub for a growing array of community activities.
This center stands as a testament to our commitment to "Empower A Student, Build A Future," transforming Belloc into a beacon of learning and real opportunity for this remote mountain region.
